Growing up in the southern Oregon wilderness, Misty Cruz spent a lifetime river fishing, hunting and gardening with her family. She was raised knowing that there is nothing better than fresh, healthy, simple seasonal foods that could become transformed into fabulous meals for all to gather and enjoy. Moving north toward the Pacific Northwest with her children, Orcas Island became Misty’s home during the summer of 2000. Along with operating island vacation cottages, she became a personal chef for private retreats. Saltwater fishing throughout the San Juan Islands increased her appetite for being on the water. Misty secured part time positions on a variety of vessels as deckhand and chef. She continued managing the local island sporting goods store, which led her to pursue continuing her education, and joined the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. Misty enrolled in maritime academy courses, and passed her USCG 100 ton merchant mariner exams. Combining her passions of her natural love for the sea and creating delicious cuisine for others flourished when she boarded the Jamal. Initially, her position was first mate. Assisting Chef Lenore Nolan-Ryan in the galley, Misty was also hired as chef her first season, propelling her passion to cook not only on an island, but literally upon the waters surrounding it. Misty Cruz is a master at sourcing the freshest locally grown ingredients available, and preparing them into uniquely delectable fare with flare.
Corinne Kocher discovered her love of cooking when she was in her teens. Later, she went on to manage the catering departments for a number of upscale hotels including the Playboy Resort and Country Club in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, the Doubletree Hotel in Seattle and the Seattle Sheraton Hotel. Moving on to the challenge of owning her own restaurant, Corinne gained extensive experience in restaurant operations. It was here that Corinne decided that catering and cooking classes were her passion. Corinne has been the Culinary Curriculum Director for Sur La Table’s numerous cooking school programs across the country (42 cooking schools), and has recently opened her own UnWined Cooking School in Kent, Washington. When cruising on the Jamal, she takes pleasure in delighting guests with her extensive seasonal menus, utilizing the finest and freshest ingredients available in the Pacific Northwest.
Peggy Platter is an adventurer at heart. She has traveled throughout Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe and has spent time as chef on a commercial fishing vessels in Southeast Alaska. Her travels have taught her that there is nothing better than fresh, simple, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Peggy’s cooking inspirations are greatly influenced by her time living in Normandy, where she learned to prepare delicious foods with fresh farm-to-market produce. Her meals are created with a flavorful passion, and a consideration to health and dietary restrictions, a discipline she embraces. Peggy is the owner of Sojourn, a very successful clothing boutique, which allows her the freedom to create cuisine cruising the islands aboard the Jamal. Deeply committed to Bellingham’s community of small businesses, Peggy frequents the farmers market and gathers fundamental foods for her kitchen through her strong network of local farmers, fishermen, and business owners. This ensures that her meals are always freshly prepared with the finest ingredients of superior quality. Peggy believes that sharing thoughtfully prepared meals with friends, in a beautiful setting, is one of the best ways to celebrate life.
Born and raised on Kodiak Island, Alaska, Amanda Bowers began commercial fishing at 17. She has more than a decade of maritime experience navigating some of the most unforgiving waters the Pacific offers. Amanda’s background is in fisheries research, management, and law enforcement. In 2009 she graduated at the top of her class from Alaska’s Nautical Training School with a 100 Ton Master’s License. Providing safety and comfort are her priorities as first mate on-board the Jamal. Outside of work Amanda enjoys exploring the beauty of this Pacific Northwest paradise by hiking, sport fishing, kayaking, foraging wild foods, and learning local history.
